Jeffrey Edman, MD

Dr.Jeffrey-Edman Medical-Director at Enve California Aesthetics

Trained at UC Davis and UC San Francisco, Dr. Edman has served as a scientist, UCSF professor, inventor, and community clinic physician. His research focused on the molecular basis of hormone action and the molecular biology of human fungal infections. He is certified in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Currently, he is focused on improving healthcare decisions through technology and “old-fashioned” lifestyle changes.

While serving as the medical director of a community clinic, Dr. Edman became acutely aware of traditional medicine’s shortcomings in diagnosing and treating chronic diseases. Traditional medicine emphasizes symptom management and adjusting lab values, such as treating pain and high cholesterol, rather than addressing the underlying causes. Physicians are often bound to follow the “evidence-based medicine” (EBM) model, even when it conflicts with their intimate knowledge of the patient or their own well-honed intuition.

Legal and insurance requirements have turned EBM into a rigid set of rules that must be followed. The financial interests of big pharmaceutical companies often dictate the types of studies conducted, and these studies, in turn, shape EBM guidelines.

Dr. Edman rejects the notion of merely treating numbers and symptoms. He advocates for finding and, whenever possible, addressing the root cause of disease. Sometimes, this cause is straightforward, but more often, it involves a complex interplay between genetics and environmental factors. With recent advances in genomics, we are now able to better understand the genetic contributions to disease, and ongoing studies are beginning to uncover the effects of the environment, consistently emphasizing the importance of both internal and external health.

Dr. Edman is a proponent of the Functional Medicine model (www.functionalmedicine.org). Unlike the one-size-fits-all approach of EBM, Functional Medicine treats each patient as a unique individual with their own life experiences and genetic makeup. Functional Medicine recognizes that patients are more than just numbers and requires a personalized treatment plan tailored to each individual.
